The purpose of Foundations of Chinese medicine is to provide basic knowledge of Chinese Medicine, which is mandatory and sufficient for further study of Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine or Tuina.

The purpose of vocational training Acupuncture is to prepare the future therapist for the professional practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
After completion of the program, the student is a qualified professional and, as long as the PLATO requirements and other requirements of the professional association have been met, he can register as a practicing acupuncturist of a professional association according to which occupational profile and code of conduct the acupuncturist works.

The starting acupuncturist:

• is trained to function independently;
• knows the basic principles of Chinese Medicine;
• masters the techniques for a good TCM history and diagnosis;
• masters the theory of the Jing luo;
• knows the location of the acupuncture points and their functioning;
• Masters various acupuncture and needle techniques and related techniques such as Moxa and Cupping;
• can draw up an individual treatment plan based on the diagnosis according to the theory of the TCM;
• Selects an appropriate treatment method fitting the patient;
• Provides a TCM treatment that fits that overall image;
• adjusts the therapy as necessary by changes in the patient's condition;
• applies the acquired communicative skills;
• follows regularly supplementary training;
• submits to reviews between fellow practitioners;
• is familiar with the laws and regulations of the Dutch Health care system;
• Has insight into medication from the regular healthcare provider;
• recognises the patient's condition also from the perspective of Western medicine
* knows the "red and yellow flags" (derived from the Plato standards).
